MODIFIED CAM PROFILE GRINDS FOR ENGINE PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT

Camshaft Engineering has developed modified profiles to provide performance improvement on a wide range of popular engines. These vary from mild grinds to provide modest improvements with the otherwise standard engine, to big grinds for engines modified for racing vehicles. The mild grinds are also useful in engines for operation on LPG, offsetting the reduction in performance usually encountered with these conversions.

Many of the modified profiles can be ground to the standard camshaft, subject to the condition of the used camshaft. The larger modified profiles often cannot be ground to standard camshafts without excessive base circle size reduction. In these cases the profiles are ground to "billet" camshafts, which are new camshafts produced with lobes left unground.
A small range of popular application billet camshafts is stocked by Camshaft Engineering, and means of ready access to other applications is available.

For new engine applications, or those not covered by the present range, Camshaft Engineering can develop modified profiles using standard rework procedures, or computer designed and manufactured profiles, especially on pivoted followers, where the profile must be designed for the particular valve train geometry for proper and reliable operation. See computer generated profiles

Together with advice on the most suitable profiles for particular applications, detail of factors to be taken into account and checked out on fitting and run-in is provided. Some of these factors are, adjustment methods on non-adjustable designs, possibility of coilbind of valve springs, possible contact of valve retainers striking the valve guide or stem seal, and the possibility (in diesel engines) of valves striking pistons at top centre.

A record card with profile detail and setting data is also provided for reference with each modified grind camshaft.
