CRACK DETECTION, HARDNESS, AND SURFACE FINISH TESTING
Camshaft Engineering has facilities for the measurement of surface hardness, surface finish,
and for nondestructive crack detection. These are routinely used in the regrinding and refurbishing of
camshafts and related components.
CRACK DETECTION
Camshaft Engineering uses the Dye Penetrant method of crack detection, as experience has indicated
this to be more effective in detecting and assesing the cracking arising from surface fatigue of lobe
and roller surfaces. This applies particularly to ensuring all such cracking has been removed in the regrinding
process. Standard practice is to conduct crack detection whenever evidence of surface breakup is observed.
Crack detection of all lobes is specified and carried out in particular applications by some Clients,
and a report is provided in these cases.
HARDNESS TESTING
Low load Indenter type hardness test equipment is used to confirm surface hardness on lobes, rollers, or other
refurbished surfaces. This minimises the size of test indents, and is applicable to small low mass items which
do not suit impact type hardness testers. Hardness testing is used where there is indication that hardness may be suspect,
or if regrinding may require normal material removal limits to be exceeded. Client approval is required in these
cases.
At client request, tests can be carried out as routine after regrinding, and reports provided.
SURFACE FINISH TESTING
Taylor-Hobson Surtronic Surface Finish equipment, including a chart recorder, is used for surface tests on any
regular geometric surface. The standard finish parameters, Ra, Rymax, Rtm, can be provided at 0.25mm or 0.8mm cutoff values.
The matching chart recorder is available for the visual assessment of finish characteristics.
The equipment is primarily used in quality control of grinding finish including
routine tests and reports on cam lobe finish at Client request. It is also used for tests on items presented by
clients (cylinder bores, cylinder heads, etc.) as confirmation of their process control meeting specification requirements.
